The verses of the great poets of medieval north India had a formative influence on the Hindi language and are still recognized as being amongst that language's finest writings. Moreover, these works have great popular appeal and even today are well known to Indians of all walks of life. This volume serves as an introduction to six of the best known of these poets - Ravidas, Kabir, Nanak, Surdas, Mirabai and Tulsidas. Each poet is the subject of a separate chapter, comprising a biographical and interpretive essay and a selection of representative verses in original translation.
