During the Viking Age, York was the most important centre of Scandinavian power and influence in Britain. This book outlines the history of this exciting period and traces the impact which the Viking settlers made. Recent excavation campaigns in the area have shed new light on the life-style of York's Viking age citizens. From the well-preserved remains of their houses and workshops, York Archaeological Trust has put together details of the environment, climate, diet, crafts and trades of the period. Details are also given of costume, arts and fashion, and the beliefs of some of the citizens are examined through their burial rituals.
