This is a text which focuses on the role of the Communist Party and its interaction with the governmental apparatus - the legislature, the military, police, and judiciary - and deals with the Party's role in other important aspects of public life; the economy, educational and communication processes, Soviet youth, the Church. It includes three case studies on recent policy decisions. It utilizes Soviet sources - journalistic, governmental and scholarly - and provides analysis of the Soviet past and shows the continuing influences of Lenin and Stalin on both the Brezhnev and Gorbachev eras. There is discussion both of the planned economy and the "shadow" economy, as well as Gorbachev's reform initiatives.
