Rae Compton explores the traditions of knitters from Tibet to Peru, and from Iceland to the Greek islands. After an introductory chapter tracing the early history of knitting, there are sections on all the familiar types of traditional knitting - Aran, Fair Isle, Faroe, etc - and also on many which are less familiar such as South American, Danish and Yugoslavian. The author stresses the importance of using the right materials and techniques for the various methods and has included instructions for special techniques and stitch patterns. Finally, instructions for the working of 13 traditional garments are given. Knitters interested in improving their traditional skills, as well as those interested in the history of the craft, should find this book of interest. Rae Compton is also the author of "The Complete Book of Guernsey and Jersey Knitting".
