A major shift is under way in contemporary capitalist industries - away from mass production and towards flexible working arrangements. This book reviews the consequences of this shift in terms of labour, employee relations, and effects on the location of industry. The work also scrutinises the effect of this shift on modern urban and regional development patterns. Case studies cover the industrial resurgence of craft industry in the Third Italy; the recent growth of high technology industry in the Scientific City south of Paris amd the locational dynamics of the US semiconductor industry, in particular Silicon Valley.
