Designed to provide teachers with a variety of resources and teaching activities, this book includes photocopiable sheets, lesson plans and a poster which should stimulate discussion about grammar. The text provides activities that explore the types and functions of words that children will encounter such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. The poster demonstrates sentence construction as a "factory", defining and demonstrating the various parts of speech, both as a focus for whole class lessons and as an essential long-term reference for the children's writing. The lesson plans are structured to support direct teaching of the whole class followed by differentiated group/individual work.
This resource bank has been compiled to help teachers of English in Key Stage 1 introduce young children to the basics of punctuation in a lively and relevant way: from recognizing sentences to understanding how punctuation can indicate the "voice" of writing. The poster highlights how sentences are constructed and some of the punctuation marks we use. This book is one of the three key strands in the NLS's framework, incorporating grammar and punctuation. There are photocopiable sheets and lesson plans that are structured to support direct teaching of the whole class followed by differentiated group/indiviudal work.
