Making systematic use of the wealth of material now available, the author lets the workers speak for themselves, allowing the reader to enter the atmosphere of the period. From this new perspective, the study questions a number of entrenched views in the historiography of the revolution, and seeks to explain why the power, so bitterly contested, began so soon to slip from the workers' hands.
