The seventh volume in the Eca de Queiros Programme. Artur Corvelo inherits a legacy, quits his provincial home town and sets out for the capital. Armed with poems and a play, he seeks literary renown and entry into fashionable circles. Disillusion follows and he returns to his origins.
The title novella was originally entitled Alves and Company and is a tale of seduction and bourgeois susceptabilities. It is accompanied by a selection of Eca de Queiro's short stories.
This novel tells the story of Carlos, heir to a noble family, who is caught in the impotence and decadence of Potuguese society at the end of the 19th century. He finds his noble intentions reduced to amiable dilettantism and his romantic passion to tragic impossibility.
Shows the author as an acute observer of life in a provincial cathedral city and a sharp critic of the clerical establishment, moved by the predicament of women - tightly swaddled in conformities yet fevered in their imaginations in the illusions of romance.
