Talking and Writing

The text is designed for key stage three, ie levels 3 to 8, of the National Curriculum attainment targets. English teaching and planning focuses on the programme of study with teachers turning to the attainment target levels for assessment guidance. This is reflected in the Macmillan English materials which have not been written AT by AT and level by level, but which should reflect the programme of study. The activities are for practical use in the classroom and they reflect the "good practice" endorsed in Cox. Each module stresses integrated teaching of the different language modes and provides a balance between listening and speaking, and relating and writing skills. A developmental approach is taken for mixed ability classes, building the skills up gradually to required levels.

The introduction of the National Curriculum has opened up the opportunity to develop good English teaching, by creating classroom situations in which students can use language to make, receive and communicate meaning in purposeful contexts. It provides a flexible set of resources for 11 to 14 year olds, consisting of eight modules, each of which focuses on a particualr language topic.
