The second of three publications concerned with refurbishment. It is estimated that 8 million square metres of office space requires refurbishment, much of it constructed in reinforced concrete. This volume argues that these buildings have the potential to provide the standards of accommodation required in the 21st century if refurbished in the correct manner. There are many factors influencing the refurbishment of concrete buildings, and the guides present the main issues from an owner/occupier or developer's viewpoint. They present cost summaries and illustrative case studies and also provide contextual information for structural and building services engineers and architects, much of which is common to buildings other than offices. This volume concentrates on office buildings and covers the structural and services options. Topics include characteristics of different ages and their implications for refurbishment; interaction between structural and services work; building sevices refurbishment options; solutions to structural problems/obstacles.
