The Discovery of the Child

by Maria Montessori

Published 12 February 1977
Maria Montessori went beyond the conventions of the day to seek a new way of knowing and loving a child. In THE DISCOVERY OF THE CHILD, she describes the nature of the child and her method of working more fully with the child's urge to learn. With 16 pages of photographs.

In this work, Maria Montessori examines the educational concerns of the older child, the adolescent, and even the mature university student. She considers each level and seeks the optimum method of facilitating growth. At the time when this work was first published, Maria Montessori proposed an "experimental school for social life" where children and their predominantly young teachers would live in a self-contained rural community.
