This illustrated guide to the French capital city covers its monuments, palaces, museums, galleries, literature, history and people. It details six tours of exploration, from the Louvre to the Bois de Boulogne and from Montmartre to Montparnasse, taking in Versailles, the Left Bank, the islands where the city was founded in about 250 BC, the Latin Quarter, the artists' quarter, Les Halles, the Pompidou Centre and the Musee d'Orsay. Paris is also a city of cafes and restaurants, parks and boulevards, and the author aims to bring them to life by relating them to the painters and sculptors, writers and singers who lived, worked and played there. Appendices provide detailed information on the history, rulers, artists, writers, patrons, monuments, buildings and opening times.
