Baron Friedrich von Hugel (1852-1925) was one of the most learned men of his time. He was devoted to the Roman Catholic Church and led a deeply spiritual life. He was involved with the modernist movement that encouraged people to have a direct personal relationship with God but when this movement and its leaders were condemned by the papacy he disassociated himself from it. Although he often struggled with the Church's views he was insistent on the importance of life within the organized Church alongside the intellectual and mystical sides of religion.
