This illustrated history portrays one of England's finest counties. It provides a nostalgic look at Wiltshire's past and highlights the special character of some of its most important historic sites.

The photographs are taken from the Historic England Archive, a unique collection of over 12 million photographs, drawings, plans and documents covering England's archaeology, architecture, social and local history. Pictures date from the earliest days of photography to the present and cover subjects from Bronze Age burials and medieval churches to cinemas and seaside resorts.

Wiltshire has played an important role in the history of Britain since prehistoric times, with its famous Neolithic sites at Stonehenge and Avebury. Salisbury's cathedral has attracted visitors since the Middle Ages and the open spaces of Salisbury Plain became the natural training ground of the British Army, much of the area still being owned by the Ministry of Defence. The county is home to several large popular country houses such as Longleat and Stourhead and although much of the county is still rural the Industrial Revolution brought canals to Wiltshire to connect the major towns in the West Country and also to reach London, and Swindon was developed by the Great Western Railway around its works. Today, Wiltshire is a thriving county, with the M4 corridor in the north of the county home to many businesses and towns such as Chippenham growing rapidly.

For all those who know and love Wiltshire, this book will enable them to discover its remarkable history and variety of places through a fascinating collection of historical photographs.
