This work covers science for those following integrated science syllabuses (Model B of the National Curriculum Science syllabuses). The range of physical, chemical and biological ideas and facts that the book contains helps the user to understand the natural and artificial aspects of the world in which we live. Fuels such as coal, gas and electricity are linked to resources and resource scarcity. Terms such as acid rain and biodegradable reflect environmental concerns in the new science teaching. For the second edition, much new material has been added to cover National Curriculum Science Attainment Targets in topics such as energy, earth sciences, materials, genetics and data handling. Thus (among many others) there are new entries on barometers, data presentation, elasticity, rain gauges and genetic engineering. In addition, the layout of the series has been redesigned for the new edition, and the text completely reset. Illustrations are now expanded upon in linked caption text, increased inter-entry spacing is easier on the eye, and running heads at the top of each page improve quick reference.
