Intervention for Men Who Batter
by Jeffrey L. Edleson and Richard M. Tolman
Published 30 November 1992
This volume provides practitioners with a concise overview of current theory and intervention for men who batter their female partners. In particular, three specific interventions are focused on: men′s treatment groups; working with the men′s families; and working within the criminal justice system.
The authors explore the multiple factors, both individual and sociocultural, that contribute to the onset and continuation of violence. The central issue of men′s control over women and children in families, and the use of physical force to implement such control, is stressed. Among the topics discussed are: assessment of the violent man, from intake through continued evaluation; legal obligations to victims; cognitive and behavioural-based treatment procedures; and practical issues involved in conducting intervention with couples.
