That's the philosophy Claire Hannaford always followed. Left in a basket shortly after her birth, Claire's never had a family - and she doesn't think she needs one. Being on her own means she's free to take nursing assignments wherever and whenever she wants.
Her latest assignment brings her to the Parker Ranch to care for ailing Mae Parker, the clan's formidable matriarch. Claire's never seen a family like this one. They all seem to be strong-willed and no-nonsense. And they don't exactly approve of Claire - since Mae went behind their backs to hire her. But one member of the extended family, Tanner - as much an outsider as Claire - stands out.
Before long, Tanner and the rest of the Parkers have Claire wondering if she's been lying to herself all these years.
