Although she loves the House at the Corner, Aunt Grace is easily irritated by the self-absorbed Farrell children - vain Pam always preening herself, mischievous Tony throwing away his education and the twins who only have time for their nature-loving pastimes and each other. Lizzie is Aunt Grace's favourite but she's so timid that she lets everyone push her around. But when disaster strikes the family must learn to work as a team, and plain Lizzie reveals a surprising talent that saves the day and brings her out of her shell for good.
Francis, Clare and Sam would love to have animals of their own, but since their father was hurt in the war it's a struggle for their poor mother to just keep the big house at Green Meadows ticking over.
