Considering some of the historical experiences of protectionism in the world economy, this book shows how it can be applied to the problems of the world economy today. This book traces the fluctuating fortunes of free trade as against protectionism from the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. It looks at the origins of the protectionist case and the circumstances in which it came to be adopted and in which it sometimes flourished. It shows that protectionism has commonly been coupled with nationalism and been associated with major calamities in the world economy.
