The first novel based in the Kings of War universe

Over a decade after violating his ruthless orders from his superiors in the Basilean military, ex-legion captain Dionne emerges from hiding in the Mountains of Tarkis, leading a force of rebels against the dark forces of the Abyss. Desperate to clamp down on the popular rebel leader, the Basilean Duma dispatches a force to bring the former legion officer to justice. Leading the paladins of this force is Tancred, freshly promoted and harboring political ambitions of his own. Under the brutal leadership of Hugh, the commander of the force, Tancred must struggle to find the balance between obeying orders, following the path of righteousness, and advancing his own ambitions.

Assisting Tancred is Orion, a violent and dangerous paladin carrying a personal vendetta with Dionne; Constance, a tough and determined mercenary sharing a dark history with Hugh; Aestelle, a lone adventurer whose unique skills betray a mysterious past, and Valletto, a veteran legion mage thrown into the front line against his will.

Tancred and Orion must fight the rebels and their sympathizers whilst battling against the politics threatening to tear their force apart from within. They must do battle from the open plains of northern Basilea to the ancient caves below the Mountains of Tarkis, fighting all who cross their path as they give chase to a deadly and determined rebel. And all the while, the dark and deadly influence of the demonic forces of the Abyss continues to play its hand, manipulating events and people alike from afar…

Claws on the Plain

by James Dunbar

Mantica has changed. With the drowning of the Abyss, the crisis in the East is over, a victory made possible by an alliance of peoples beneath the Green Lady's banner. Galahir is saved, the Great Cataract remains unclaimed, and the Ahmunite fleet rests eternal in the depths of the Infant Sea.

The West tells a different story. Scarcely noticed by the Lady's alliance, a massive orc invasion surged across the Ardovikian Plain. Against this green tide, the men and women of the Successor Kingdoms stood alone (with the exception of a little hired help). Rising boldly to the challenge, they united in the construction of a Great Wall along the Southern Plain, from which their armies decisively drove the orcs out of Ardovikia. It was a grand victory, and in its wake are those who talk of a new and glorious age in the West.

Standing at the precipice of a new era is little comfort to Uslo Dargent, general of the mercenary company Dargent's Claws. Known to his men as 'the Silver Cat', Uslo's posting was uneventful during the war, and now, eight months after its end, it is nothing less than utter tedium. Denied a place in the defining conflict of his lifetime, Uslo itches for glory.

Not everything about the war was quite so enviable. The Young Kingdoms of the Plain are devastated, unaided or exploited by the Successor Kingdoms; the roaming Plainsmen of Ardovikia, having fled south to escape the orcish swarm, find themselves trapped beyond the Wall, forced into serfdom for Southern Lords. In a stroke of mutual good fortune, Uslo and the Ardovikians discover that their desires are aligned. The indentured Plainsmen wish for a return to their northern home and will need help crossing the Wall. In exchange, they promise to lead Uslo to something far more valuable than the glories of war - treasures from the age of Primovantor!

However, events in the east are not as distant as they might seem. Another has his eyes on the Plain and, with an army of the dispossessed at his back, would set his claws upon it.

Two leaders seek their destiny. Both will discover they are pawns in a game far greater than they can imagine, and, on the Ardovikian Plain, both will find far more than they bargained for...

Lieutenant Jaymes Ellias is ready to leave the Basilean Navy. A career spent in coastal defence and administrative positions has left him dejected and resentful, and he has a plan for life outside the military. But when he is suddenly sent to the ship’s company of the HW Pious, an elohi-class frigate, he is propelled into action under the command of the harsh, sardonic Captain Charn Ferrus. Ferrus and his squadron are employed in pirate hunting duties in the sun-drenched Infant Sea, combating the increasingly aggressive exploits of the self-styled orc admiral, Ghurak. Fighting alongside Jaymes are Karnon Senne, a newly appointed Basilean marine captain experienced in warfare on land, and Caithlin Viconti, a privateer captain whose expert knowledge of sailing does not match her inexperience in warfare. Jaymes and the crew of the Pious must brave deadly orc warships and their violent pirate crews across the idyllic, green seas of the Infant Sea and the sandy island chains south of the Basilean mainland to put a stop to the brutal, deadly fleet of Ghurak.

Broken Alliance is a story set in Mantic Games’ Kings of War universe. It is a tale of battles and magic, cruel betrayals and unexpected friendships, courage and honor.

The Halfling Shires had been members of the League of Rhordia for over a hundred years. The alliance had been mutually beneficial from the start; the humans of the League received the surplus of the Shires’ bountiful farms and pastures, and the Shires received the additional security of the League’s powerful military in a very dangerous world.

But recently the relationship has begun to sour. For reasons no one understands, a darkness is poisoning the once-strong friendship between the peoples. Suspicion, anger, and even violence has begun to tear the alliance apart. The threat of war, something once unthinkable, has become very real.

Halfling Aeron Cadwallader, a cadet at the League’s prestigious College of Warcraft, finds himself caught between the two sides. Cast out by the League, mistrusted by his fellow halflings, he struggles to survive amidst the war that soon erupts, and find a way to help his people defend themselves against the powerful League.

The fame and success following the Battle of Andro has left ex-Sisterhood mercenary and adventurer Aestelle both wealthy and famous, but also spiritually unfulfilled and disenchanted. Knowing that her actions in the lead up to that battle have awakened an evil in the Mountains of Tarkis, she assembles a group of adventurers from her past to return to the mountains and put right her mistake. At her side are the famed adventurers Ragran the Mighty, a brutal warrior from the Howling Peaks, and Thesilar, an elven archer famed for her role in defeating the orc warlord Thrundak. Also in the band is Z’akke, a gentle and optimistic salamander mage-priest with his own mission, and Valletto, another veteran of the Battle of Andro who is needed once more for his skills as an aeromancer.

Braving the ancient corridors and tunnels of the ancient, long forgotten mountain tombs, the band of warriors struggle onward in the face of the undead, simultaneously threatened from within by conflicting motivations and forceful personalities. The situation for Aestelle is complicated further by the arrival of Khirius, a vampire lord forced to flee by the Order of the Brothermark, and now the unwilling ally of a dark, secretive underground alliance of undead operating within the very heart of Basilea.
