Biographer and journalist Rona Parish is drawn into a web of dark secrets and lies when she investigates the histories of two local family firms.

Journalist Rona Parish is eager for a fresh challenge. A chance encounter with an old friend, Kate, now married into the Tarlton family, gives her an idea. Rona will research the histories of several long-established family firms in the town, notably the Tarltons and the Clarendon Hotel. Then Kate enlists Rona's help in getting to the bottom of sister-in-law Freya's terrifying nightmares, and Rona finds herself drawn into the complex web of relationships linking the families.

Biographer Rona Parish has a new project, contributing a series for the local glossy magazine, Chiltern Life, documenting life-changing experiences from those who have lived through them. When her father suggests she speaks to his friend Frank Hathaway, who was in Iraq during the invasion of Kuwait, Rona decides to pay him a visit. But Frank was also badly injured in a failed rescue attempt following a car crash the previous year, and has been tormented by flashbacks ever since. As Frank's flashbacks start to yield more clues as to what happened on that fateful night, Rona finds herself drawn into another dark and compelling mystery.

Biographer Rona Parish is keen to finish her series on successful single mothers for local glossy magazine, Chiltern Life - and interviewing the mysterious and intriguing Nicole Summers should finish off the series nicely. But on one of her visits to Nicole's house, Rona makes a shocking discovery . . .

Meanwhile, Rona has also taken on a new project - finishing the book acclaimed biographer Russell Page was writing on Gideon Ward, a TV presenter, before the recent car crash that killed him. But when Russell's wife hands over his notes and papers, Rona soon starts to realize that something isn't quite right.

The new Rona Parish mystery Rona Parish is asked to write a biography of reclusive artist Ellie by her concerned sister. Ellie hasn't been seen or heard from for over a year and there is much speculation as to what might have happened to her. While Ellie's star had been waning before she vanished, the mystery surrounding her whereabouts has fuelled interest in her work. Rona discovers that Ellie's closest friend from their schooldays, Chloe Pyne, had committed suicide a couple of years previously, apparently torn between the demanding and self-centred Ellie and her new boyfriend Nathan Tait. Could Ellie, wracked by guilt, have finally been driven to do likewise?
