A Jennifer Gray Veterinarian Mystery
12 primary works
Book 1
Readers who loved the adventures of Nancy Drew will appreciate amateur sleuth Jennifer Gray, resident of the charming, old-fashioned town of Calico, Nebraska. After graduation from veterinarian school, Jennifer has returned to Calico to live with her wise and wonderful grandfather, who is the local pastor, and his gregarious housekeeper, Emma. One of the chief delights of this series is getting to know the quirky residents of Calico who assist Jennifer in her investigations—from the overworked (and overfed) sheriff who connives with Jennifer, to the ambitious young attorney who adores her.
In this first book of the series, Jennifer is asked to treat a dog who has obviously been poisoned with strychnine. Jennifer’s natural curiosity turns to suspicion when the dog’s owner, Pam Aldrich, claims the poison was meant for her!
Be sure not to miss a single one of Jennifer’s cases—all of which are based on her love and concern for her four-footed and feathered friends.
Book 2
Two little boys are missing, and a ransom note has arrived. The FBI sends a team of experts, but Jennifer has another idea. Why not enlist the services of Elvis, the biggest and best tracking dog in the county? The lovable Saint Bernard (who fancies himself a bloodhound) may be a bit past his prime, but he and Jennifer embark on an unforgettable adventure that turns out to be the boys’ only hope for survival. And as the situation becomes increasingly dangerous, Jennifer’s own life may depend on the courage of her canine partner.
Book 3
It’s just an ordinary day at the clinic until veterinarian and amateur sleuth Jennifer Gray takes a good look at the bone she has just removed from the throat of a local dog who had swallowed more than he could chew. The bone looks a lot like a finger bone, a human finger bone. Jennifer does a little bit of digging and uncovers a lot more than she expects to find. A long-forgotten missing person may no longer be quite so missing, and someone in town may have a very good reason to want Jennifer dead.
Book 4
It is Halloween week in Calico, and as the local people begin carving pumpkins and making caramel apples for the big community costume party, their Halloween spirit is marred by the thief prowling their streets. Will they have to cancel the holiday festivities and stay home to guard their houses? When a young couple return from a night of bowling to see what looks like a wild panther escaping from their third-floor balcony, the sheriff decides to call on Jennifer for help. Will she be able to stop Calico’s “cat” burglar?
Book 5
Emma Morrison has always ordered a fresh Thanksgiving turkey from the local butcher, and this year is no exception. Imagine her chagrin when she is given a frozen turkey by mistake. Imagine her further chagrin when instead of giblets, the defrosted bird contains a diamond necklace. Someone has made a big mistake, and Jennifer Gray suspects quite rightly that the error will endanger the lives of everyone involved.
Book 6
Penelope Davis has agreed to take care of a friend’s parrot while he’s in the hospital, but the parrot has escaped from the cage and is waging war with Penelope’s fifteen cats. Jennifer Gray saves the parrot from the cats (or vice versa), and takes the bird back to the parsonage. But Scaramouch (Scamp) is no ordinary parrot, and he has an interesting tale to tell of treachery and treasure. At first Jennifer ignores his chattering, but she soon decides that the bird may indeed know a secret. And that secret turns out to be both very, very valuable, and very, very deadly.

Calico is holding a six-day spectacular over Labor Day, but there’s more than just festivities going on in this sleepy little Nebraska town. First of all, there’s the sudden appearance of counterfeit money, and the equally sudden appearance of Paul Bishop, a handsome blond-haired man with a beautiful dog named Casey. Next, there’s the picture that veterinarian Jennifer Gray bought from Elmer Dodd that he is trying to buy back at a much higher price.
Attracted to a possible counterfeiter, and the owner of a painting in great demand, Jennifer doesn’t exactly know what is going on…but she is determined to find out!
Book 10
Willy Ashton, Calico’s newly elected mayor, is being pursued by Debrah Beyer, whom he once had a crush on in high school. She is a woman who left town after the accidental drowning of her twin sister and has now returned to open a gift shop. Everyone knows that Debrah’s motives are not romantic except poor Willy.
When Julia Mock, a mysterious poor widow never seen without her sunglasses, comes to town, Jennifer Gray’s heart goes out to her. Jennifer’s heart goes out to her even more when Julia dies in a freak car accident. It soon becomes apparent to Jennifer and the townspeople that it may not have been an accident. What secrets will be revealed before this mystery is solved?
Book 11
Nothing in the town of Calico has been the same since the Grays’ housekeeper, Emma Morrison, started writing. After she reads the first installment of her mystery to her writing class, everybody in town wants to know what happens next. So does Emma, who is struggling with writer’s block.
As Emma attempts to finish her story, another writer sends Emma clues, copying the very format of Emma’s story. Has Emma inadvertently discovered a deep, dark secret in Calico’s history? Is there really a body buried beneath the roses? Is someone in Calico a murderer?
Book 12
Something has got Peaches spooked! The otherwise happy and healthy chimpanzee is suddenly acting moody and frantic. Concerned for their beloved pet, the Cromwell sisters bring Peaches to veterinarian Jennifer Gray, who speculates that Peaches’ condition is caused by discord over the sisters’ respective beaus.
But then Peaches is kidnapped, and the whole of town enter the hunt to find her. Will the folks of Calico be able to save Peaches from the clutches of the dastardly villain who would trade the chimpanzee’s life for the recipe to the sisters’ homemade elixir?
