Countess Anastasia and Irena, an illiterate peasant girl, were worlds apart, but when Duncan MacReith learned Lord Eveson had raped Irena he rushed to the big house intent on revenge. But with Eveson having hurriedly departed, MacReith is confronted by the Countess. Now, as a welcome diversion in her unhappy, childless marriage, she does not turn him away. The pair talk, drink vodka and lose all inhibitions. When both the Countess and Irena find themselves pregnant, Anastasia's announcement is met with delight and relief whilst Irena is left fearful that Eveson conceived her baby. Will her beloved Duncan accept the child as his own? And then war breaks out in Russia and Duncan disappears whilst serving on the frontlines. Against all advice, Irena must battle to find him and a future for herself.
