Book 3

The intentions of the town administration of Witten on the Ruhr to give a new look to the "back-side" of its industrial sector have failed for the most part. The Witten Administration Centre is an exception however. The old building's new glass steel facade is incorporated by a large wall-pane which, as a brick-clad frame is connected to the new building, in whose foyer it beckons through thin slits, large windows and house-high apertures. The building is a seemingly plain structure; however, it is extraordinarily multifaceted in its complex order and disciplined in its formal instruments, materials and colours. With regard to everyday use, this purism demands care and attention from the building's owners and residents. This volume presents the architectural details of this building and includes large-format photographs, plans, sketches and text to reveal the creative vision of the architects and the objectives of the clients. This book is part of a series which aims to present exceptional projects that have only had minimal coverage in the trade journals.
