This new book by Trevor Ford is the first full account of all the cave systems in the Castleton area. It includes the recent discoveries of Titan, Leviathan and the White River Series. Although the tourist caves are well known, the much larger group of 'wild' caves have their own story to tell, especially as they are now part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, administered by Natural England. As in Trevor's "Rocks and Scenery of the Peak District", this book is also written in layman's language rather than geo-speak. It includes a 32 page color section of images supplied by Paul Deakin - arguably the best underground photographer in the country. This book also provides an insight into the way cave explorers operate and what they have discovered - including the deepest known cave system in the country.
This is an introduction to the story of the Peak District through the detectives eyes of a geologist. The text should enable the reader to understand this landscape and how it has evolved. It looks at the physical features and the underlying rocks, and explains why the landscape has been formed in this way. It also looks at mineralogy, volcanic remains, sandstone deposits and many other clues to the landscape ot the Peak District.
