But Sulu and Chekov soon find themselves framed for murder and treason, and the two officers are forced to go into hiding. Admiral Kirk and Lt. Uhura frantically search for evidence to prove Sulu and Chekov innocent and uncover a plot that threatens the very foundations of Starfleet.
The web of conspiracy is woven tighter as the real culprits and Federation agents close in on the fugitives. Unsure of whom to trust and with time running out, the former U.S.S. Enterprise shipmates must once again rely on each other to find the truth and prevent the Federation from facing utter destruction.
Stranded on a transformed Federation colony, now a Gorn mining outpost worked by human slaves, Helmsman Hikaru Sulu encounters an older version of a man he barely knows: Pavel Chekov, leader of the scattered bands of freedom fighters against the tyrannical Gorn oppressors. Nor is Sulu himself unchanged by this new future -- in this timeline he has become a battle-scarred Starship captain.
For Captain James T. Kirk, meanwhile, the vortex has had the opposite effect, as he himself is hurled back through time and into his former boyhood...
As they barely escape the destruction of a dying planet, Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise are catapulted three days into the past by an anti-matter explosion. But their unexpected detour through time soon presents a very real danger, not only to the Enterprise but also to the entire Federation.
In order to avoid meeting their past selves the crew make their way to a remote planet which seems to be an uninhabited paradise. But their peaceful stay is cut short when Captain Kirk and Dr McCoy abruptly vanish. The planet conceals a vortex, and anyone making a wrong move risks being sucked into it. With Mr Spock taking command the crew attempt to uncover the true nature of the planet -- and to discover what has become of the missing Kirk and McCoy. As the story unfolds, it leads to a spectacular and shocking revelation...
