The Panama Canal, which links the Pacific and Atlantic oceans through 44 miles of Central America, will have been open for 100 years in 2014. Constructed in a difficult environment by workers from many nations, the canal increased trade and eased global travel. The canal was a major feat of engineering in its time and continues to be an impressive piece of work today.
