Coming Home

In the first title, Amy and her mother are in a fierce trailer accident after rescuing an abandoned horse. Amy's mother is killed immediately, and Amy is rushed to hospital in a serious condition while the horse is sent to a local vet. When Amy wakes from her coma, she must face returning to life at the stable without her mother. She cowers in her room after returning from the hospital, denying the comfort she could find in the familiar smell of grain and the welcoming nickers of the horse. Not until a pony falls terribly ill does Amy consider her mother's absolute commitment to horses; then she realises it is her own deepest passion as well.

After the Storm

Amy attempts to treat Spartan, the horse involved in the accident that killed Amy's mother. But Amy soon learns Spartan is not the only who has wounds yet to heal. Although Amy is helping out with the horses at Heartland again, she is still weighted by a sense of guilt for her mother's death. And she misses her mum too much to dismiss her fear that she was responsible for the trailer crash. Furthermore, Amy's trying to care for Spartan, the horse they saved before the accident, but Spartan is an everyday reminder of the wreck and how it changed everything. And for Spartan, Amy is a reminder of the crash as well - no matter what attempts she makes , Spartan is vicious towards her. At the very sight of her he lashes out, rearing defiantly and baring his teeth. Faulting herself, Amy feels she can't blame Spartan for hating her. Then she realises Spartan will never forgive her until she forgives herself.

Amy hasn't seen Spartan since the accident - on that stormy night that changed their lives for ever. Now Spartan is coming to Heatland. He's not the same horse and he's filled with an anger that seems directed at Amy. At the sight of her, he lashes out - teeth bared, hooves flailing. Amy has much healing to do on her own, it seems she's the last person who could help Spartan. But she might also be the only one.
