The work which is described in this 1960 report is a continuation of the research project which was reported in the book, Technical Change and Industrial Relations (W. H. Scott et ah, Liverpool University- Press, 1956). The earlier study sought to analyse, in a large steel-works, the relations between technical change, social structure and industrial relations; the present study was designed to achieve a more precise description and interpretation of attitudes to technical change. This report, like its predecessor, is a product of the Industrial Research Section of the Department of Social Science, and all members of the Section have made a contribution to the development of the work or to the revision of this report. The work was supervised and the report prepared by Dr. Olive Banks, and statistical advice and assistance were provided by Elizabeth Gittus and M. Eileen Polding. Other members of staff engaged primarily on this study were J. M. Kirkby, C. J. Parsons and P. Jackson.
