In this work, the author examines contemporary understandings of the role of adolescents in social movements and the effects which these movements have on adolescent development, through a case study of youth involvement in the Palestinian Intifada. He argues that much current understanding of these issues is based on Western perspectives that do not take into account how different cultural environments affect outcomes. The Palestinian community is placed in its political and cultural context. Barber uses both survey-statistical and ethnographic methods to examine the causes of adolescent involvement and the effects of that involvement on adolescent development.
