GINNY, one of the girls in A Place for Ann, came to Chicago with great expectations. If she could just get a start, she knew she could make good as an illustrator of children's books. The job her cousin Ann had found for her in Murdoch's book department would be a help toward this end; she could study the work of other illustrators, and she liked to deal with people. But she didn't plan to spend her life selling books. When an opportunity came to make sketches for one of Polly Payne's juveniles, Ginny did her very best on them, and lived for days in a rosy cloud of hope, only half aware of the Christmas rush in the store and plans for a New Year's Eve party.
Ginny had to learn a lesson -- to hitch her wagon to a star, but not to lose sight of the job at hand. Understanding Larry, sensible Ann, the lovable and scatterbrained Tarrants, and Mrs. Farmer, the head buyer, who wasn't as much of a dragon as she seemed - all helped Ginny to a better perspective on what might have been bitter disappointment, and a job nearer Ginny's goal made the future look promising.
