Who would have thought Satan would be into Backstreet Boys?
As a voracious reader, I find it astounding that I can still come across something original. Yes, I'm familiar with the characters names and previously read interpretations of the good and evil they have done. Dark Angel gives us a new take on how good become evil and evil doesn't have to be forever. This story is a journey to the dark side to see evil in the form of a teenage boy. See, in Dark Angel Satan looks like a teenage boy and tends to act as immature as one too. For some reason, I could not get Kurt from Glee out of my head. I know, kind of funny but sometimes your imagination does weird things.
So, the story starts out with us meeting Lucifer at The Devil’s Advocate, a haven for the supernatural. Luc has lived a very long life and in that time he has served as an angel and on the flipside The Prince of Darkness. He and a couple of his angel buddies decided they didn’t like being bossed around so much and caused a wee war that the higher uppers didn’t like. Once he and his mates had been taken to task, they had their wings taken away and their punishment was to live an immortal life as servants to Satan.
The longer they hold this position the darker their souls are. Luc and the other fallen angels hate what they’ve become, regret their actions and feel guilt for the pain they’ve caused. It doesn’t help that they hate their new jobs. Satan is not a very nice boss. One little mess up can see you facing torture that leaves you begging for death.
One of Luc’s “jobs” is collecting the humans who have sacrificed their souls to Satan. His latest “job” doesn’t sit right with Luc and he does a little investigating. This new soul he is to round up is different and he feels an instant connection to her. Luc knows there will be torture in his future because there is no way he’s handing her over.
Katia has lived a life never feeling quite whole. She was adopted at a young age but lost both her parents a few years back. With no family left, her violin gives her a way to share her loneliness. Katia’s playing is soulful and very appealing and has made her famous.
Katia’s closest friend Sergei is her accompanying pianist. Their friendship is strong but Sergei wants to take it to the next level. Katia is willing to give it a go and accepts his invitation to go on a date. Their first date does not turn out as planned when Katia is kidnapped. What follows changes both Sergei and Katia’s lives forever.
Luc and Katia form a connection from the very beginning. Luc is hesitant to push himself on her because he thinks she’s too good for him. Katia has just found out that the life she’s lived up till now has been a lie. It turns out that she has some special powers that Satan wants as his own. Luc and Katia must work together while also dealing with the feelings that are growing between them.
I really enjoyed Dark Angel. I’m a huge fan of paranormal romance and this one definitely caught my attention. Admittedly, when I start a new paranormal series, I struggle to get past the beginning where we have to wade through the who, what, how and when’s of their world. If I can get past that stage and it still has my attention, then I’m normally on a winner. Dark Angel did drag for me at first and it didn’t help that it was a wee bit too wordy for my liking. Once I was past the 25% mark I was definitely sucked in. I liked the main characters and became a fan of the additional ones we meet, good and evil.
The romance part of the story develops early but we don’t actually see the couple come together until later in the story. The intimate scenes were sweet and while not OTT, they still managed to convey the feelings of the characters.
The story is a little wordier than I like and the world building was a little drawn out, but overall I did enjoy it. The storyline, characters and scenery were described well and it was fairly easy to imagine the scenes playing out.
Dark Angel is the first book in this series and I'm definitely a fan. After reading the snippet for the next book in the series, Broken Angel, I can’t wait to see how B gets out of the spot of bother he’s in.
