If you want an analytical approach to plot and book structure, Plot & Structure (ahem, the title) is an excellent choice
Plot & Structure is best consumed, perhaps, after you’ve written your first draft and as you prepare for revisions. If you’re just starting out, the information here might be overwhelming. The reason the book is awesome is also why it’s overwhelming: there’s a lot to take in and assimilate.
But. BUT. Each chapter provides exercises where you can apply the lessons to your writing, giving you actual techniques you can implement. And one of my goals in providing my blog readers a reading list is to find books that give you actionable tips. I like ACTION, especially when it involves WRITING.
Plot & Structure forces you to take a step back from your story and challenges you to craft the best story possible
For example. Think your ending is good? Go jot down ten alternative endings. It sounds like extra work, but this exercise (ACTION) encourages you to think harder and deeper about your story. Even if you stick with your original, those alternative endings might give your story additional flavor or depth.
This is the kind of book I recommend using to your needs. Don’t glom and implement all of the exercises—pick and choose what works for you. Experiment with what’s provided until you find revision techniques you prefer.
It’ll make you a better writer—and your book a better book.
