In this moment, I understand what I must do. I will turn my mukana: opportunity into a mukana: opportunity for others. I will become just like the girl in the blue uniform and work to uplift my village and my community. Thanks to Dad, I now know that to be the girl in the blue uniform means working for the United Nations. And I vow that is what I will do. No matter what.
Elizabeth Nyamayaro spent her childhood in rural Zimbabwe, living with her grandmother in a village affected by both HIV/AIDS and famine. During one such famine, Elizabeth was given food and water by 'the girl in the blue uniform', a United Nations worker, who inspired her to work for the United Nations herself. Perservering through incredible odds, Elizabeth eventually became a Senior Advisor at the United Nations on Gender Equality and the Global Head of HeforShe, a popular gender equality campaign initiated by the UN.
Alternating chapters from Elizabeth's childhood with her extended family and beloved grandmother, who taught her the concept of Ubuntu, 'I am because we are', and scenes from her work with the United Nations, World Health Organization, World Bank, and other organisations, I Am a Girl from Africa is a tremendously inspiring story of hard work, humanitarianism, and dedication. Through the concepts Elizabeth learned from her grandmother, she was driven to uplift not just herself but also her community, including the entire continent of Africa.
Elizabeth is an extraordinary person, dynamic, brilliant, and compelling, and she has a truly incredible story. In I Am a Girl from Africa her life, her work, and her message of empowerment come vividly alive.
