Creal Oram, champion dolphin rider of Garuda has a wrestles spirit. During a visit from his characterful young cousins Zak and Elliot, he offends his caring sister and strict parents by highlighting corruption in the system in complaints to the mayor. Sent on a pilgrimage to the Valley of Tyres, the archipelago receives its first visit from tourists operating a machine driven vessel and so awakens them to elements that oppose their faith. Creal is chosen to lead a mission to the dark shore and what is discovered contrasts to the idle of nature once treasured in the bliss of ignorance of invention.
