Sir Stuart Hampshire is one of the most influential British philosophers today. In this revealing book of conversations, he offers a personal insight into the history of the twentieth century, Oxford in the heyday of Isherwood and Spender, his years in MI6 during the war, his academic life and interests, and his passionate belief in socialism. This book is a wonderfully intelligent account of Hampshire's philosophical development, throwing light on thinkers such as Spinoza and on themes as relevant as liberty and justice. Born in October 1914, Stuart Hampshire became a fellow of All Soul's College and lecturer in Philosophy at Oxford before serving in the army from 1940 to 1945. After the war he held several distinguished posts in Britain and North America, including Princeton and Stanford University, and was warden of Wadham College, Oxford from 1970-1984. He was knighted in 1979.
