Each piece culminates in the selection and discussion of the "definitive" song for that number. Why number songs? The numerals between 1 and 99 are the ones we experience most often in our daily existence-the elemental numerals that have worked their way into the rhythms of our lives, our figures of speech, our culture and our songs. My purpose-as is the case with discursive essayists everywhere-is to engage readers and make them think about things in ways they hadn't before.
