For parents who are worried about sending their kids off to secondary school, expect more sensitivity about social dynamics from the teaching profession. First year in Secondary School is the most critical. From the top of our social pyramid in Primary School, we find ourselves at the bottom of the pecking order. The friends we make, the groups we form, the classes we find ourselves in, the streams we get funnelled into, determine the rest of our educational experience, and set a trajectory for our lives. Becoming sensitive to social dynamics is an educational imperative, and sadly neglected by our professions, teaching, psychological and educational. We can not keep thinking we are teaching individuals. We are teaching groups comprised of individuals. Teamworking should be at the heart of our educational institutions.
