This introductory text is based on a survey of all sociology curricula. It responds to the radical transformation that the discipline has undergone in recent years in terms of the way sociology is taught and studied. The book intends to engage the student's interest by going beyond the realm of "facts" and "founding fathers". The author achieves this by pinpointing the areas that should interest a new generation of students - the personal, the cultural, the environmental - and by showing what sociology can contribute to their understanding. In addition, the textbook contains a number of pedagogical features including: profiles of individual theorists; boxed definitions; discursive summaries of further reading at the end of each section; and discussion topics.
