This volume argues for a better and more effective compact among Africa and its development partners. It is a product of the increasing spirit of collaboration among some of the major institutions involved in African development - the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Global Coalition for Africa (GCA), the UN-Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), African Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. The report is eminently optimistic despite the enormity of the development challenges for the region. More than 50 scholars, policymakers and development practitioners participated in this effort to appraise the region's development balance-sheet at the turn of the 21st century and, in partnership, articulate a road map into the future.
