Anthony Smith is 78 next birthday and wants to sail across the Atlantic, solo, by raft using the trade winds. Thor Heyerdahl, Tim Severin - there have been many who have used rafts and recreated journeys as they must have been done in dynasties past. Anthony Smith, too, has a sense of history. His book will not just be a daily diary, but something much deeper and wide-ranging. He will, for instance, reflect on others who have found themselves in an open craft on the Atlantic. One particular war-time story which he has investigated is of the crew of a ship sunk by a German U-boat who escaped from the scene in a lifeboat. Seven started out, but shortage of water and food lead to death and suicide, so that when the boat landed up in the Bahamas there were only two survivors. He will aim for the same beach in the Bahamas where they landed. He will also, among other matters, reflect on age and the importance of experience when undertaking such an adventure. He is a natural raconteur and able easily to hold one's attention as he explains the whole project. He is a natural for promotion. The journey itself will take approximately 60 days and needs to happen outside the hurricane season, i
