As the assessment movement reaches the And of two decades of intense activity, it is natural to ask the question: Has it made a difference? Even more important than a simple yes or no answer are the lessons learned from the successes and failures that the movement has had over the last fifteen years in trying to make a difference in the lives of students and in the culture of higher education institutions. The chapters in this volume of New Directions for Higher Education cite several successful assessment efforts. They answer questions about why efforts succeed sometimes and not other times, and they provide a rich source of proven practices and lessons learned. Such practices and lessons will be useful for faculty and administrators who are developing and implementing assessment programs at their own institutions, as well as for those in state and national government and in regional accrediting agencies and foundations who hope to facilitate the development of effective assessment programs. This is the 100th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Higher Education. For more information on the series, please see the Journals and Periodicals section.
