During World War II, exiled airmen from six occupied countries in Europe fought and flew alongside the squadrons of the Royal Air Force from British soil. All of these men had escaped from occupied territory and had a burning desire to hit back at the Nazi war machine that had so ruthlessly crushed their homelands. This text looks at the organization and deployment of these squadrons and units, the political controversies generated by their arrival and the obstacles that needed to be overcome, the fighting experience of the men themselves and their squadrons during the war, and finally, the circumstances, difficulties and practicalities of their repatriation at the war's end. The author offers evidence which highlights a secret and often hypocritical British attitude to their uninvited allies.
