The GBP1.2 billion Cairo Wastewater Project was designed to remove water from one of the world's largest and fastest growing cities and treat it to a standard permitting re-use for agriculture. By 2000, Cairo will have a population of around 14 million, nearly double that of London or New York, meaning that a dramtically improved wastewater system was urgently required. The nine refereed papers in this special issue of ICE Proceedings have been written by senior members of the project team. They cover all aspects of the planning, design, construction and management of the project including a 12.1 km long deep spine tunnel of 4-5m diameter, 35 km of connecting tunnels, 80km of pressure main, 23 km of open canal and a 3x10 m/day treatment plant at Gabal el Asfar.
