These poems address the age-old question of the human relation to earth, universe, and God. Perhaps we are an isolated aberration with little relation to natural or divine law; or to the contrary, perhaps we reflect natural law and purpose, which is known as the anthropic principle. The first set of poems named "Anthropos" describes these possibilities. But we also are flawed in our selfish relation to life and the planet, as evidenced by pollution, global warming and overpopulation, which has led many scientists to speak of the "sixth extinction" and which is suggested by the subtitle "Poems on Human Survival in the Coming Extinction." Perhaps natural and divine laws are flawed as well, depending on the varied cosmological and theological viewpoints that are presented. The last set of poems explores spiritual reasons for hope, ending as the book started about the instincts of birds.
