Rina and I carried out many `freedom camping' trips to Paeroa in the `Titanic'. It was no real surprise when my sister Dee and her hubby Stu McColl bought Beulah from the Pearson's - Len and Phyllis. Rina and I occupied the property for about four months before the McColl's took up residence.
We met Vic Olivier in Auckland - he was working with Stu McColl at the Glenfield Salvation Army Family Store. Vic and his wife Anne settled in Paeroa and it was Anne that mentioned to the McColl's that Len and Phyllis Pearson's home was up for sale. Anne spoke highly of the Elim Church, so Rina and I put in an early appearance.
Liz Taukiri warmly welcomed Rina and me when we stepped through the church entrance. It was the sort of welcome that makes a lasting impression on a newcomer. The welcome was repeated by Pastor Cliff Kershaw and we gladly took up the invitation to stay for tea/coffee fellowship after the service. Rina and I took an immediate liking to the very friendly and welcoming congregation.
