Before Nero Wolfe there were others detectives, such a Canby Rankin, Dol Bonner, and Tecumseh Fox who paved the road for the most famous of Stout's characters. Tecumseh Fox in particular is a fictional private detective created to provide some diversity from the opinionated, somewhat eccentric Nero Wolfe.
Stout wrote only three mystery novels featuring the Tecumseh Fox before devoting himself to writing mostly Nero Wolfe books. Double for Death is the first of these novels. The other two, The Broken Vase and Bad for Business were later adapted to Nero Wolfe stories.
