While the Cinderella that I know was left with a miserable stepmother and stepsisters after her father died, in this story he is there but completely controlled by the stepmother. Apparently not cursed or anything, just silent and unseen. That makes me curious, but then he could have been a spineless push-over I assume. The whole moral of this one is kept and that was always gone from my childhood versions. Cinderella knows to be kind to all, because it is the right thing to do and I cannot even fathom how her kindness in the end might have won over even the most cruel and critical of her associations.
I'll have to shop for this one, as it was a library find grasped by the interesting spine and cover illustrations. Oh and on that note, what interesting illustrations they were. Oh! and that reminds me there is so much more history found within this retelling including the robe and dress of the time period (estimated) and the fact of a ball lasting more than one day. Very delighted in this find, no wonder it is an award winner.
