Armistice Day, 1918: Joseph MacDougal has just been released from a prisoner of war camp back into the arms of his family. His adoring youngest daughter, Gracie, is especially glad to have him back as now she can work by his side in the family automobile garage. However, Gracie's mother wants her to follow in her own footsteps as a lady's maid. So, when her new position takes her to Scotland, Gracie is determined to make contact with her father's estranged family, who also run a succesful garage. She then encourages both garages to design and enter rival sports cars in a race at Brooklands, in the hope that she can instigate a reunion. Set against a background ranging from the market stalls of the East End of London to the mountains of Scotland, Gracie must not only come to terms with the hardships of adulthood, but also learn to confront her emotions and choose her own destiny.
