Five Miss Marple short stories taken from The Thirteen Problems

When Raymond West, a young writer is entertaining friends they decide that each should tell a story of a mystery, without revealing the answer so that the others can try to guess the outcome. It is felt that with their combined skills and variety of individual experience, they will be able to solve the problems presented.

Raymond’s contribution is his rich writer’s imagination, while Joyce Lemprière sees things through the eyes of a woman as well as an artist. Dr Pender the clergyman, claims to know the hidden side of human character. Mr Petherick, a lawyer, is only interested in the logical approach to the mysteries, whereas Sir Henry Clithering, ex-commissioner of Scotland Yard, is obviously skilled at crime solving generally.

And then there is Raymond’s Aunt Jane – a gentle lady with snowy hair and pale blue eyes. Miss Marple joins in to make the sixth member of the group: “I’m afraid I am not very clever myself,” she claims, “but living all these years in St Mary Mead does give one an insight into human nature.”
